EXTENDED, Out
of the Whirlwind: Hugh Mesibov's Book of Job.
Originally
scheduled to close
This mural
was commissioned in 1969 and completed and installed in 1972 at the Temple Beth
El in Spring Valley, Rockland County, New York.
Mesibov was
a modernist but his goal was to illustrate the biblical narrative in a
figurative format. The result is a highly expressive, even baroque exploration
of the suffering and the redemption of Job.
In 2016 the
synagogue donated this monumental painting to the Yeshiva University Museum, 15
West 16th Street, NY, NY. It is on view in the Popper Gallery
through March 12, 2017, and not to be missed.
