Curators Jill
Bugajski and John Murphy originated the show at Northwestern University. The
artists were largely members of either the John Reed Clubs or the American
Artists’ Congress, radical artists’ groups, yet the artistic range is vast. As
Peter Schjeldahl wrote in the New Yorker review “Artists are hard to herd.”
