It was just wonderful to see William Baziotes,
Surrealist Watercolors, on now view at the Allentown Art Museum through August
23, 2015.
The show features twenty-four drawings from
Baziotes’ early, surrealist period, 1936 to 1939. Ranging from rooftop bathing
beauties and ameba-shaped circus performers to howling bulls’ heads exhibition
was organized by Elaine Mehalakes, the museum’s Vice President of Curatorial
and Education. Robert S. Mattison of Lafayette College provided the catalogue
essay.
Professor Mattison made the point that the
Yellow Creature with Fist is closely related to Joan Miro’s pochoir Aidez l’Espagne
(Aid Spain), 1937. The drawing has the added attraction of being
autobiographical as Baziotes was a boxer.
