Peter Grippe: Prints and Drawings

Grippe (1912-2002) was born in Buffalo, NY. He studied at the Albright-Knox Art School and the Art Institute of Buffalo. A member of the American Abstract Artists group, in the early 1940s he studied with Stanley William Hayter at the New York intaglio printmaking workshop, Atelier 17; he later served as director. In the summer of 1948 he taught sculpture at Black Mountain College and later taught at the Pratt Institute and Smith College. He was the first professor of sculpture and graphics at Brandeis University. In 2010 the Allentown Art Museum showed: Peter Grippe: A Personal Vocabulary. His work is in permanent collections throughout the country.

LYND WARD, New Edition of Woodcut Novels

    Edited by Art Spiegelman, LYND WARD, SIX NOVELS IN WOODCUTS, was released by The Library of America on October 14.  This handsome publication features, in additional to all the prints for the Novels (dating from 1929 to 1937), nine essays by Ward, and an appreciation by Spiegelman, author of Maus.

The Susan Teller Gallery represents the work of Lynd Ward.

Fred Shane (1906-1990) was a regionalist, surrealist, muralist, and long-time teacher at the University of Missouri. Widely admired for early down-to-earth portraits of his all too human mid-western neighbors, his landscapes of Colorado and California ranged from awe-inspiring to affectionate views of tourist foibles. His surrealist pieces are among the strongest produced in post-war America.
