LAST DAY! Innovation and Abstraction

Innovation and Abstraction: Women Artists and Atelier 17 is in it’s last day at the Pollock-Krasner House, The Springs, East Hampton, NY.

We are especially appreciative of curator Dr. Christina Weyl’s interest in the work of MINNA CITRON, WORDEN DAY, DOROTHY DEHNER, SUE FULLER, ALICE TRUMBULL MASON, and ANNE RYAN.

NATIONAL CAT DAY

As Peggy Bacon said "A life without cats isn't worth living." Thank goodness they have a National Day of their own.

WORKSHOP AND LEGACY SHOW AT THE METROPOLITAN

-->

Workshop and Legacy: Stanley William Hayter, Krishna Reddy, Zarini Hashmi

October 6, 2016, through March 26, 2017
Gallery 464

This exhibition, a joint effort between the Department of Islamic Art and the Department of Drawings and Prints, focuses on the collaborative and supportive environment of Hayter’s Atelier 17. The Hayters in the show are from the New York, World War II branch, while those from Reddy and Zarini are from later years in Paris where all three artists worked together.

Below is case in the exhibition: Three holiday cards by Stanley William Hayter, including the card for 1946, upper left, also shown here separately, and at the right, the card for 1952, with an annotation to our own Anne Ryan.

The card at the upper right is currently part of our Atelier 17 list:

It was hard to get a shot of the whole room because there were several vitrines. But at the rear of the gallery there was the perfect background to the exhibition: An Indian “Floor Spread” from the seventeenth century with printed poppies. It had been re-purposed with cut-outs and an additional border.

THE MISSING LINK

The Missing Link
Sue Fuller, Cacophony, 1944, first state

Sue Fuller, Cacophony, 1944, first state
At the Innovation and Abstraction: Women Artists and Atelier 17 exhibition, Fuller’s Collage, 1944, and final state of Cacophony are both on view. Missing is the first state clearly showing that the collage was used through soft-ground to help etch those vegetable-bag strings into the copper plate. Many steps later the final state has lace and net and all sorts of things giving a rich and intricate surround for the figures.

WOMEN OF ATELIER 17, NEW YORK

-->

Innovation and Abstraction: Women Artists and Atelier 17 is now on view at the Pollock-Krasner House, The Springs, East Hampton, NY, through October 29, 2016.

Minna Citron, Ishtar, 1946, on loan for exhibition.

The curator, Dr. Christina Weyl, selected eight artists to feature from the more than ninety women who worked at the New York facility between 1940 and 1955. For each she selected intaglio prints indicative of their Atelier experience as well as an additional piece in another medium: paintings for MINNA CITRON and ALICE TRUMBULL MASON, string construction for SUE FULLER, sculptures for WORDEN DAY and DOROTHY DEHNER, and woodcut and collage for ANNE RYAN. Works by Louise Bourgeois and Louise Nevelson are also included.
