New: Lithographs by ZYGMUND JANKOWSKI

Zygmund Jankowski (1925-2009) is known for his modernist compositions, highly original sense of color, and effective use of  “the white of the paper.” He was born in South Bend, Indiana. After serving in the US Navy Jankowski attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, where studied with, Victor DeWilde, Otis Oldfield, and George Post.

Returning to the mid-west he taught at Indiana University, South Western Michigan College, Hilton Leech School of Art, the Bremen Art Center, the Niles Art Center, the South Bend Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association.

Beginning in 1964 he summered in Rocky Neck, MA, and opened a summertime gallery. In the 1970s he made a permanent move to Gloucester where he held workshops at his studio. In the 1990s he moved to Lanesville. Among those institutions with work by Jankowski is the Cape Ann Museum. In their biography of the artist they acknowledge his role of inspiring a generation of Cape Ann artists.

Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000

On Thursday, April 20^th, the exhibition Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000, opened at the Grey Art Gallery of NYU. The show, and the catalogue, that also has the AAA print list, are so welcome! Our thanks to Gail Windisch who started the ball rolling and who not only created the list of the AAA prints (begun by Meg Hausberg at AAA in the 1970s), but also researched and explained the complicated publishing, commissions, gallery sales-triangle that worked so well in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Liz Seaton, of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, Jane Myers, formerly of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, and Gail Windisch, are the curators of the exhibition, which will run through July 9, 2016.

The exhibition focuses on the publishing side of the gallery and includes prints made into the 1970s, was well as examples of holiday cards, Stonelain Ceramics, and Riverdale Fabrics, created by AAA artists in the 1950s. (Maybe there was even wallpaper, but that didn’t make it into the show.)

Wall labels and examples of archival brochures address much of the history of the gallery, from its early days with founder Reeve Lewenthal, through his successor – my old boss, Sylvan Cole, Jr., who stayed through 1983.

Included are works by Peggy Bacon, Thomas Hart Benton, Douglas Gorsline, Joe Jones, Harry Sternberg, Georges Schreiber (not only by his 250 edition lithograph, From Arkansas, 1941, but also a watercolor, and amazing, a totally abstract patterned fabric), and many, many more artists. The catalogue and exhibition were about fifteen years in coming and they are both terrific.

MoMA’s JACKSON POLLOCK Show Closing Tomorrow

In a season of terrific exhibitions, the Pollock show at the Museum of Modern Art was a knockout. Drawn from their own collection, it featured paintings and works on paper by one of the most important and influential American artists of the twentieth century. Today and tomorrow are the very last days to see Jackson Pollock: A Collection Survey, 1934-1954.

Daum’s admiration for Picasso’s Guernica then under the protection of the Museum of

Modern Art, and, as the title reminds us, a Post-World-War II image.
